THE JEDI
ACADEMY
____________________________________________________

Noble Jedis! Well, it was inevitable. The Star Wars fanatics out of us have finally started making lightsaber duels. Do you blame us? Free periods are a wonderful time to be productive, don't you think?
PS. Any ideas for new Jedi scenes are welcome. Phantom Menace, AOTC and Episodes 4-6 rip-offs are especially welcome (heh). Email me!

"Jedi Stand"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
A new hope. This is the very first Jedi image we made. Marshall's holding a very conveniently sized umbrella - the background is the new canteen. In any event, we thought we'd start off simple... as you can see below, things got complicated quickly.

"How To Stab"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
A moment of brillance. This is one of the rare times when we don't mean to make a photo, but it comes out fantastic in both its simplicity and its composition (if I do say so myself!). We were waiting around at the time - the canteen lady was trying to figure out the cash register and so we had to wait in order to experience the joys of filling ourselves with extraordinarily unhealthy chocolate bars.
It was then that Marshall made the wonderful gesture of stabbing Joey in the stomach. At the very same moment, Dennis smiled widely at my lens. And finally, Jim's head poked out behind Dennis' blazer. It was unbelievably perfect. A flash and a lightsaber later; and this is the result.

"Push: Dennis"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
"Force push!" We often vocalise our Jedi commands to make doubly sure that people know what we're doing. In this case, I caught Marshall mid-sentence, and his mouth is slightly agape, the words still coming out of his mouth. And Dennis is left, flying out of frame. Another triumph for the midichlorians (what on earth are those?).

"Push: Joey & Dennis"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
"Rats, I mucked it up again!" This particular photo took at least half a dozen shots to get right. But the result makes it worth the effort! Now... if only I could do this in real life...

"Push: Daniel"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
Everyone wanted in. Once we saw the results from those first two pushes, everyone wanted a go. Here's Daniel's contribution. Notably, Jim always seemed to keep a fairly safe difference away from the camera. Your loss, Dingers!

"Jump: Marshall"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
The second session began when we headed to the hall. We needed better sticks - and more of them - to accomplish the planned scenes. We found some long pieces of wood (how... convenient) and decided that double-ended sabers were in order (and, also, single-ended sabers which were obscenely long). This is Marshall's jumping attack on Darth... ummm... Darth Louis.

"Pose: Louis"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
Imagination gives way to awe when you realise the possibilities for coolness factor. Here is Louis' basic pose. Now, if only he had the face paint... and perhaps horns growing out of his head...

"Pose: Dennis"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
Complaints, complaints, complaints! Unfortunately, that's pretty much all I get to hear about this image. It is, of course, as a result of the saber, which is... well... quite long. In my defence, I will state that the sticks we used for saber-substitutes were about that length; and also, I happen to have read a Star Wars-universe book in which a Jedi constructs a lightsaber capable of extending from normal length to triple that of an ordinary saber; about four metres long. So there you go!

"Pose: All Jedis"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
Showoffs, all of you! We had three sticks in total, and so we used them all at once. Decided to start off with a basic pose before getting into the hack-and-slash action... as a side note, Dennis has on his face a very stern expression, after all the jokes we made about his big smile messing up the "Push: Joey & Dennis" photo. For the record, I think Dennis did just fine, but I won't stop him - he's darn good with a saber (you should see the videos!). Ignore the fact that Dennis' saber seems to switch randomly from single to double-ended. Sssshhhhhhh.

"Stabbed: Louis & Dennis"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
Once stabbed, twice shy. Joey was smart enough to steer clear of this one! Here, Louis is flexing his muscle (?... just kidding!) and running Dennis straight through. Aside... I'm still working on the saber exit wounds. Any suggestions for improvement welcome.

"Clash: Dark & Light"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
"Ahhh, this is more like it!" A real saber fight. Phantom Menace, anyone? I know the saber contact points are a little shabby, but it'll suffice for fifteen minutes work. And again, Dennis shows off his really long saber. What can I say after that? Expect more. As soon as we have another free period. (And access to sticks.)

"Don't Touch My Rambutan"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
I've really fine-tuned my sabers lately, and this is the result. Dennis' pose here is very basic - there were only very few of us around at the time, and only one saber - errr, umbrella. Now, I thought this fearsome pose would best be described as... well, already victorious, and looking menacingly at a defeated foe on the ground. That foe, I think, must have tried to take something from Dennis. Something of value. Like a fruit. Like a rambutan.

"Protector"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
I finally got into it myself... Dennis convinced me. This is the very first Jedi Academy photo that I myself have starred in. It didn't come out too badly, contrary to expectations... the title really explains it all. Mmmm, purple saber. How does 'Mace Eddie' sound for you?

"Ignited"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
Hoi-Ming joins the fray. This is the first and sadly, possibly the last time Ming will star in one of our Jedi photos, mostly due to his frees not coinciding with ours (I think he was meant to have library ag at the time). But while he was around, I gave him a cool... err, I mean, hot orange saber. Very sweet.

"Need Something Measured?"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
"Because I have a saber handy..." Heheh. Marshall wasn't very happy with this photo when we took it, and he told me that we ought to retake it later, but when I opened it up at home I found it was perfect. Slotted in Marshall's characteristic saber, and there you have it! This one's just for you, Marshall.

"Hilts"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
At Louis' urging, I've figured out a way to put hilts into our Jedi pics. They're CG (computer-generated), naturally, but I think they could have come out much worse. There are versions of four of the latest Jedi photos here, with hilts. (If you don't know what a hilt is, it's the metal bit that you hold onto on a sword.)

"Daniel's First Saber"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
How exciting! Getting one's first lightsaber. One person I was talking to recently was simply "speechless" when she saw the lightsabers here on this page. Well, Daniel, this one's for you, buddy - show it off to all your friends. *wink*

"Jaws"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
In the James Bond series, there is a character whose name is Jaws. He stands two metres tall, is stronger than a giant, and has metal teeth. Now, Lung isn't quite two metres tall, and we're working on the metal teeth business, but hey - if Jaws was a Jedi, this is what he would look like.

"Dark Supremacy"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
Louis is power-hungry. Along with Jim (Darth Ding) and John (Lord Vijayaraj), he is one of the few Sith (dark Jedi) around. Here he is preying on Jedi Master Marshall and his padawan, young James Daiwalker.

"Yoda"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
A colossal face-off. Here, Lord Vijayaraj confronts the one and only Yoda. Only time (to be more specific, free periods and mornings) will tell how this battle unfolds - between the fallen Jedi and the one-metre tall Jedi Master, no-one knows who will be victorious.

"John's Revenge"
[ Large Rainbow Version ]
John exacts his revenge on the surprised Nguyen. Nguyen, with his Yoda-sized blade, cannot retaliate and takes a... umm... painful hit. (Notice the smoke puffing out behind him.)
